Is Cleaning Therapy? What the Research Actually Says
Share
Cleaning is not a replacement for therapy, but there is real research suggesting that cleaning, and doing it mindfully, can ease stress in the moment. Here is what the studies found, and where the claims stop.
Why cleaning feels like a reset
Most of us know the feeling. You wipe a counter, fold a pile of clothes or mop a floor, and your head feels a little clearer. It is a small task with a clear start, a clear end and a visible result. That is rare in a busy week.
What the research says
Cleaning and stress
A paper titled Actual Cleaning and Simulated Cleaning Attenuate Psychological and Physiological Effects of Stressful Events looked at the link between cleaning and how people respond to stress. The researchers build on the idea that physical cleaning acts as a concrete way of separating ourselves from unpleasant experiences, such as failures. In their findings, cleaning, including simulated cleaning, reduced the effects of stressful events. Read the paper on PubMed Central.
Mindful dishwashing
In a study published in the journal Mindfulness, 51 college students either washed dishes with a short mindfulness instruction or washed them without it. The mindful group reported more state mindfulness, a rise in feelings such as inspiration, and a drop in nervousness. The study was small, and it was students, so treat it as a promising signal, not a rule. Read the abstract.
What this does not prove
- It does not show that cleaning treats anxiety, depression or any condition.
- It does not mean a spotless home is the goal. A calm home beats a perfect one.
- If low mood or stress is affecting your daily life, please speak to a doctor or a qualified professional.
How to make cleaning feel more like a reset
- Pick one small job. A single surface, one shelf, one load of laundry.
- Use your senses. Notice the water temperature, the texture, the scent. This is the mindful part.
- Remove friction. Pre-measured sheets and a spray you like reaching for make it easier to start. See our philosophy.
- Stop when it is done. One finished task is the point.
